First non-stop flight by Lufthansa: Munich - New York

For the first time in the history of Munich Airport, a Boing 720 from Lufthansa flew non-stop Munich - New York on Sunday, May 23, 1965.

The runway at Munich Airport, with the length of 2.6 km valid in 1965, was only sufficient for aircraft with an absolute take-off weight of 130 tons. A fully occupied and fully fueled Boing 720 weighed around 140 tons. In practice, this meant that the planes in Munich-Riem fill up with less fuel and that they had a stopover on the flight to America to replenish their fuel supply.

The non-stop flight, a special flight, was possible because the plane with 66 passengers was not fully occupied and the corresponding amount of fuel required for a non-stop flight Munich - New York could be refueled.

Since the flight was carried out without a stopover, the flight time was reduced from 10 hours by 2.5 hours to 7.5 hours. The plane started at Munich Airport at 10:33 a.m. and landed in New York at 6:00 p.m.
