From 1992 to summer 1996, the former airport grounds were used as a cultural center. Little by little, the last remnants of the Riem Airport disappeared to make room for the new Munich Trade Fair Center and the trade fair city. In November 1996, for example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/flughafen-muenchen-riem.de\/en\/history\/lufthansa-wartungshalle-gesprengt\/\">Lufthansa maintenance hangar blown up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The dismantling of Munich Riem Airport was completed in 1998.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today the New Munich Trade Fair Center and the trade fair city of Riem are located on the approx. 500 hectare area of the former Munich airport in Riem. Various attempts to put the former airport tower and its surrounding open space to good use failed in 1995, 2006 and 2009. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2016, the tower was converted into a modern office complex. On July 11, 2017, the new BRAINLAB headquarters of Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel will be officially opened. The dilapidated and collapsing grandstand was cordoned off in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Like the tower and the coat of arms hall, the grandstand and the front building were placed under monument protection in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\u201c1_2,1_2\u2033 _builder_version=\u201c4.16\u2033 global_colors_info=\u201c{}\u201c][et_pb_column type=\u201c1_2\u2033 _builder_version=\u201c4.16\u2033 custom_padding=&quot;|||&quot; global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d custom_padding__hover=\u201d|||\u201d][et_pb_text _builder_version=\u201d4.16\u2033 global_colors_info=\u201d{}\u201d]<\/p>\n<h3>End of the building \/ ticket office auditorium<\/h3>\n<p><span>The so-called head building is the former box office of the grandstand. Until the middle of the 1970s there was such a front building at the beginning as well as at the end of the grandstand. Today only the west end of Munich Airport remains.
